What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown covers your existing tooth or replaces it completely. They often made from porcelain and blend in perfectly with your existing teeth. Well-constructed crowns blend in so well that nobody but you will know it isn’t natural.
Why Would I Need a Dental Crown?
Teeth can become damaged in many ways. A crown is often recommended when a tooth breaks or has become decayed to the point that a filling isn’t practical. Other times include when a tooth that is extremely crooked or missing, or you have had a root canal. In some cases, the dentist will try to strengthen a tooth that is there by putting a crown on it to keep the tooth from breaking.
Dental Crown Procedure
First, the dentist files the tooth to allow room for the crown. Next, the dentist will prepare the crown material and mold it over the remaining tooth. Once it dries, they will smooth it out and make sure it fits properly with the rest of your teeth in both color and size. Finally, the dentist glues the crown into place to make sure it does not become loose and fall out. They then gives it a final inspection to see how well it fits your other teeth.
Taking Care of Your Crown
Taking care of your new dental crown is as easy as taking proper care of your other teeth. Regular brushing and flossing will keep it looking nice. Don’t eat anything too hard to avoid chipping the new crown. This will be the only special precaution you need to take.
